It Doesn't Matter

 Denial #4

The purpose of life is a question that is getting more intriguing as our command of knowledge increases. However, more knowledge hasn't gotten (the non-God believing among) us any closer to the meaning of life.

If you are a truly objective scientific guy, you cannot not accept the argument put forth in Denial #2, that every step and action of your existence has been decided and locked in since the Big Bang. This page explores the consequences if you deny that, that is, you believe everyone has the free will to decide to do good or bad.

The current scientific consensus is that the world was created by some unknown forces for some unknown reasons. It is important to note that purpose not known has the same effect as no purpose. If the mystic force that created the universe had kept its intentions from us and keeping us ignorant, it is as good as our existence having no purpose.

If there is no purpose to life, why does it matter whether you do good or be totally diabolical?

If you are going to die and simply disappear, why does it matter what you may have or have not achieved during your existence on earth. What good does all the stuff that Bill Gates is doing serve if there is no ultimate purpose? What good is a temporal achievement or happiness that disappears after you die? So what if you leave behind a fantastic legacy? Those people who remember are going to die anyway.

It therefore follows that a person who drives a car into a crowd and mows down body after body, or a shooter that goes into a school and shoots up scores of students is as accomplished as Bill Gates. Or rather, what Bill Gates has achieved is as meaningless as a mass killer's accomplishments. Looked at another way, a mass killer is more enlightened than Bill Gates. He gets it, that it doesn't matter, while Bill Gates often gets upset if something he wants done does not turn out the way he wanted.

If you do not know the purpose of life, why bother to put in even one iota of effort to do something good? You have to accept that whatever you do, good or bad, does not matter a bit. Do you deny this?
